The Juvenile club was delighted to once again host the Dermot Naughton Blitz on Saturday last. The village of Newtownshandrum was a hive of activity last Saturday morning as car loads of enthusiastic players started to arrive from 9.30 onwards. The annual event is always much talked about and greatly anticipated by our young players and this year was no different. In total 8 teams participated with teams from Aghabullogue, Clooney Quin, Granagh, Monaleen, Athenry, Ballyea and Killadangan. The turnout was fantastic and the pitches were awash with colours from counties near and far. As usual there was a wonderful atmosphere on the side lines as family members happily cheered on their respective teams whilst also enjoying some refreshing treats from the visiting coffee truck. Our own Shandrum boys had a fantastic morning winning all three of their group games securing themselves a much coveted place in the final, much to the joy of their coaches and family supporters. Unfortunately the Dermot Naughton Cup is leaving the parish temporarily to cross over into Clare. The Morning concluded with an address from our own chairman Liam Ryan followed by the Naughton family presenting all the teams with a plaque to commemorate the day. A well deserved 99 for all the players from the ice-cream van brought the day to its conclusion. A special word of thanks goes to the Naughton family for sponsoring the Blitz and we thank Shane Cathal and Josephine for giving us their time and being present with us on the day to present the prizes. The club would also like to thank all the referees who oversaw events on the day and kept the games running smoothly. A tremendous amount of work goes into organising an event like this and we would like to thank everybody who helped organise and run the event in any way and to all those who turned out to support making the event a truly memorable and successful one.
